Resource Title The Freshman Dormitory: A New Living Experience in U.P. Diliman
Date Issued March 2011
Abstract Residence halls or dormitories play an important role in the lives of the students living within the facility. It is considered their second home, living away from their own homes mostly in the province. Dormitories are not only a place for students to sleep. It is better described as a living and learning community that is part of the larger academic institution, the University.
Currently, the University of the Philippines Diliman has eleven dormitories serving a total of 3,000 students. Most dormitories on campus have been built 30-40 years ago and are now showing signs of aging and degradation. Six of these dormitories cater undergraduate students where one is exclusively for freshman, the Kalayaan Residence Hall. It can cater 198 male students and 344 female students, a total of 542. Current data shows that the freshman population has been increasing every year. This also means an increase in student housing demand. At present, a number of freshman students are being accommodated in non-freshman dormitories on campus just to attend into their housing needs.
This research aims to include the study of the present condition of the existing dormitories in U.P. Diliman and find a suitable and better design of a future dormitory that would cater to freshman students of the University.
