| Abstract | This research focuses on describing the experiences, challenges and adaptations of live-in domestic workers as they participate in family engagement, for the education of their young children in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interview guides, guided by the principles of Sikolohiyang Pilipino, were utilized to facilitate online interviews with 12 livein domestic workers who were recruited through purposive sampling. These interviews were recorded, and subsequently transcribed and organized through online collaborative applications. Data obtained showed that family engagement was present among all live-in domestic workers’ in the study, and that the experiences of these workers’ and their children were interwoven and influential to their family systems. Workers’ contribution to family engagement, in particular, was evident before the pandemic; however, the persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged this engagement for both workers and their left-behind family members. These challenges include prolonged separation, barriers to mobile phone communication, and the struggles with modular learning. While live-in domestic workers are able to circumnavigate these challenges through adaptations, great attention must still be given to the hardships and sacrifices these adaptations entail. The discussion provided may generate sufficient insight to improve the conditions surrounding live-in domestic workers and their families, and inform stakeholders of relevant findings. Future studies may look into broadening the scope of this research and increasing the sample size to draw data that is more inclusive and representative of the specific population. |
