Resource Title A phenomenological study on the experiences of UP faculty members in migrating to remote learning setup during the COVID-19 pandemic
Date Issued 11 June 2022
Abstract In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of the Philippines implemented a remote learning setup in moving forward with the resumption of classes. Recognizing the community’s unfamiliarity with the alternative setup, this study sought to look into the experiences of UP Diliman instructors in using UVLê as the main platform for delivering course information under a remote learning setup. Adopting a phenomenological exploratory design informed by Measuring Effectiveness of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) by Piccoli, and Sense-Making by Dervin, semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain an overview of their experiences. Respondents were mainly concerned with the challenge of migrating to the remote learning setup. Specifically, they needed to plan the flow of their classes from the first until the last day of the semester. This included the adjustment of learning materials and their presentation to fit the circumstances of the new setup. In this process, various digital platforms were chosen as key channels for communicating course information with students for both synchronous and asynchronous activities, with both categories presenting their own unique difficulties. Common challenges include a lack of feedback from students and learning to effectively use the digital platforms. Responses to these obstacles entailed direct solutions and a change of mindset and expectations for the remote setup. This study encourages the UP administration to work together with its faculty members in addressing these challenges on top of their existing initiatives and devise strategies to improve the communication of course information with students in both synchronous and asynchronous meetings.
