Abstract | This study focuses on exploring the concept of godparenthood in the Philippine context for the past two decades. Being in a country in which majority of the citizens are Christian in religion, the Filipinos have their own share of godparenthood concepts and practices when it comes to performing their sworn roles as the second parent of their godchild such as having their own extended family members to be their godparent. However, recent evidence point out that godparenting may have been changing through times as seen during Christmas season when issues regarding godparents emerge, catching the attention of the Catholic Church as these godparents have become associated with material and monetary gifts instead of their sworn roles during the godchild’s baptism. Literature also shows that studies regarding godparenthood are limited, which suggests that the nature of godparenthood and godparenting are understudied and lacking representation in the research field. With the current state of godparenthood in the Philippines and paired with the Filipino trait of being family-oriented, the need to explore the concept of Filipino godparenthood arises for the concept to be given light to godparents, godchildren, and their families. |
