Resource Title Understanding couchsurfing in the Philippines using sikolohiyang Pilipino
Date Issued 13 June 2022
Abstract Hospitality is one of the oldest industries one could think of. Accounts on the experience of travelers have been noted since before common era. The boom of tourism in the mid-1900 meant the creation of commercial lodging facilities, particularly hotels. As both the tourism and hospitality grow, scholars have been concerned with alternative lodging spaces to distribute economic gains to smaller players. Coupled with the rise of the internet, the concept of sharing economy emerged. This concept allows individuals to share and make profit out of their spare
assets. Accommodation sharing has been introduced alongside with its most famous players AirBnB and Couchsurfing. Both can be tagged as homestays, but the unique characteristic of CouchSurfing is that it does not entail financial exchange. The nexus is propelled by factors other than economic gains. What those factors are is the focus of this study. Particularly, this study interpreted a baseline understanding of CouchSurfing, described the adjustments the hosts undergo, and related connected Filipino values at play within the hosting process. Getting in the
field, the researcher did a series of semi-structured interviews, and informal validation with other members of the CouchSurfing community. The methodology is guided by Sikolohiyang Pilipino, both as a data collect method and as a data analysis theory, and grounded theory methodology. Through the discussion of kapwa, trust, privacy, and habitus, the author answered the objectives set and xiv detailed the hosting experience of the Filipino CouchSurfing users. As a baseline
study, it offers a minefield of research topics other scholars could delve into.
