Abstract The latter part of the 19th century saw the emergence of a new building form. The high-rise, or the skyscraper, became the answer to problems of space deficiency and the need to express and further architectural style. With limited land area available, people realized that the only way to maximize a parcel of land was to build vertically. The race for the skies then began. Up to this time, engineers, architects and developers feel that the tallest building is not tall enough. The competition is now as intense as ever, with the current record now in Asia, courtesy of Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Twin Towers, standing at 450 meters, dwarfing the Sears Towers by a measly 7 meters. 1 The proponents of the skyscrapers see them as works of grandeur, as testaments to man's ingenuity and capability. Is opponents on the other hand, see nothing but a symbol of man's pomposity, identifying it as a detriment to the city and its inhabitants.

One of the functions of the high-rise has been to provide an abode for offices. The concept of the office has evolved through the years in order to meet the changing requirements of office workers and clients and to adapt to technological innovations. When computers were first introduced in offices, many were thinking that these machines would eventually replace office workers. This may come to fruition in the distant future, but for now, offices are still alive with people, and computers and other technological advancements are only subservient to the living, breathing workforce.
