Abstract This is an exploratory study of the profile of nine women deprived of liberty and the effects of incarceration on their social functioning specifically the biopsychosocial-economic and spiritual dimensions and their adaptive capacities. The women’s profile reveals their disadvantaged socioeconomic position and multiple roles in their families as breadwinners and providers of care for their children and elderly parents. They also have trauma experiences from separation from their parents as children and abuse of intimate partners and a stepfather during childhood. The women as biopsychosocial beings are affected by challenges inside jails such as their loss of liberty and autonomy, change of status as a person deprived of liberty, separation from their families that diminished capacity to fulfill roles in this system as well as existing policies and legal frameworks that are relevant to them as persons deprived of liberty. Successful adaptation to challenges is dependent on the women’s pragmatism and resiliency, maintaining smooth interpersonal relationships with fellow PDL and participation in the programs and services as well as compliance with the enforced protocols by the jail management. Dysfunctions in the systems within this ecological environment are brought about by the lack of mutuality in the exchange of resources or the mismatch of the expectations and demands between the systems. Thus, a Social Work practice that is right-based, integrative, and utilizes a feminist lens is necessary to address factors that impinge on the promotion, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of women deprived of liberty inside jails.
