Resource Title Evaluation of DepEd’s neutral chair dimensions for public elementary schools in compliance with R.A. 11394
Date Issued 23 June 2023
Abstract This study aims to evaluate the dimensions used by the Department of Education (DepEd) for their neutral chair design for public elementary school students in accordance with the Republic Act 11394, an act mandating educational institutions to provide neutral desks to students. The researcher’s framework was guided by evidence-based design method that was used in a related study, where anthropometric data was verified through measurements of actual users. Thirty (30) students, composed of five students each from grades level 1 to 6 (mix of male, female, and left-handed students) from Sorsogon Pilot Elementary School were selected using convenience sampling. Their anthropometric measurements were taken and in reference to a desk. An adjustable stool was used to simulate the chair and its variable comfortable sitting height, as rated by the students through a Likert scale. The data results for this study were compared to the anthropometrics data of Lipardo’s research in 2006 using T-test and found significant variances in terms of anthropometric measurements, specifically for grades 1 to 3. The results also showed that not all grade levels found the table height easy to use. In conclusion, the neutral chair dimensions proposed by DepEd is viable to be used by all grade levels; however, students from grade level 1-3 may struggle with the seat and table height. This study will be beneficial in the implementation of the new law, in providing appropriate neutral chairs that are taken from the users’ data. Neutrality translates equality and inclusion, especially for left-handed students who have been neglected in terms of providing comfortable furniture pieces in learning spaces.
