| Abstract | The "Shoe Capital of the Philippines" was a title given to Marikina in 1956 due to the influx of shoe production nationwide and the industry's contribution to the economic development of the city way back in the 19th century. Despite all the success and setbacks brought by economic instability, inevitable urban development, and natural catastrophe, the industry continuously strived to survive and endure its changes. Although the historical development of shoemaking was explored and written by most scholars and researchers, the spatial relationship between the industry and the spaces that house this intangible cultural heritage was insufficiently studied and documented. Related studies on the evolution and influences, development of building form, spatial configuration, and architectural significance were utilized to support the analysis and understand the whole discourse of the research. Furthermore, theoretical and architectural concepts on space, such as the Social Logic of Space (Space Syntax), Production of Space (Spatial Triad), and Thematic Analysis (CCT Method), examined the physical, social, and cultural aspects embedded into the personal and communal domesticity of spaces. The results found that the presence of shoemaking shophouses in Marikina is not just an object of utility or a mere representation of the prevailing dwelling structure in the city but is grounded in its historical foundation, cultural manifestations, and social relationships between the people and its built environment. Thus, the study suggested that the "Marikina Shophouse" are considered a distinct domestic building typology and unique to the country as it employs heritage and community-engaging space that goes beyond and is not limited to its physicality and utility. |
