| Abstract | The provincial capitol building has long been a symbol of power and democracy of the provincial government. The physical structure is a plethora of political and societal underpinnings in the propagation of provincial power. Civic structures, more importantly those which seats the local government have often been under bad light for allegories of corruption and traditional politics. Contrary to the initial nature of provincial capitols, which were adapted originally from US statehouses and capitols, these buildings were supposed to project the power of a democratic government emanating from the people. This study investigated democracy represented by architectural elements. An approach on the study of semiotics of Provincial Capitol Buildings architecture as radiating symbols of democratic power. Eight capitol buildings of Luzon were chosen to represent different architectural significances. The elevations of these structures were documented and digitalized. The digital copies are then analyzed through the theories of semiotics. Surveys and focused group discussions are proposed to examine the deep context of perceiving architectural elements on the structure. |
