Abstract This qualitative research study focuses on the integration of informal settlement communities within inhabited heritage sites, with a specific focus on the Maisan Compound in Intramuros, Manila. The study developed a conceptual framework that highlights the importance of involving public and private organizations, physical conservation and rehabilitation, cultural heritage education and training, acculturation to heritage sites and values, community environment development, community engagement, community participation in the protection of cultural heritage, and local-economic development.
Through a case study approach, model inhabited towns were examined to identify lessons learned and challenges seen in the integration of informal settlement communities. The study concludes that community participation is essential for the future sustainability of inhabited heritage sites. The development of policies that prioritize community involvement and empowerment was done in this research. These policies focused on improving living conditions, providing education and training, creating economic opportunities, and encouraging cultural preservation.
Overall, this study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to the integration of informal settlement communities within inhabited heritage sites. By prioritizing community involvement and cultural preservation, the development of these sites can be equitable and sustainable heritage sites.
