| Abstract | The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic brought forth extensive challenges to multiple aspects of people’s way of life. In the Philippines, one of the most affected societal sectors is the commercial industry, specifically the public markets. Driven by the shifting spatial and social activity demands, the focal point of this research project is to formulate a pandemic-responsive design for public markets in the Philippines through the principles of adaptable and flexible architecture. To actualize the architectural design proposals for the topic, the Pasig City Mega Market was chosen as the subject area, as it aptly represents the characteristics of a Philippine public market. Along with such a goal, the study also shed light on the existing parameters and present issues of a public market (socio-economic and spatial impacts of COVID-19) through the following methods: scrutiny of previous architectural works and research; analysis of the site and its occupants (surveys and interviews); and design translation of collated data. In brief, the design project primarily covers the research gap concerning the lack of architectural design strategies for Philippine public markets in the new normal and future setup. Moreover, the advancement of this study not only improves the quality of Pasig City Mega Market’s commercial space and the spatial experience of its users but also can be used as a design guide for similar types of establishments. |
