Abstract Numerous researchers have noted the significance of investigating not only on how students do well, but also why many highly able students do not perform well or underachieve. Most data on high ability underachievers have been derived mainly from quantitative research findings and methodologies with focus on grade school and high school students. A paucity of qualitative research exists that examines high ability college students' experiences of underachievement, particularly in the local context. This lack of research has meant that these students' underachievement may go unnoticed or even be misunderstood.

Qualitative research was utilized to conduct this study on high ability Filipino college students enrolled in STEM programs in a state university and their underachievement experiences. The research questions that guided the study were: (1) What are the lived experiences of high ability Filipino college students who underachieve? What factors, contexts or situations influenced the students' experiences of high ability underachievement? (2) What is the essence of the underachievement experience of high ability Filipino college students in STEM? I used purposive sampling to identify the ten participants or co-researchers, with whom I conducted in-depth phenomenological interviews. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed for analysis. The inductive, descriptive approach of the phenomenological method was used to explore and describe the essence of their lived experience and led to six themes: struggling to adapt to the complexity of university life; under constant pressure in trying to meet or exceed expectations of other people; in a state of limbo where everything seems hazy, directionless and ill-defined; needing trustworthy persons with whom to confide and seek support; finding coping mechanism to vent out emotions and handle setbacks; and reaching a turning point in one's life.
