Resource Title | Using teacher-generated concept maps in biology Integration with physical sciences for students’ performance tasks |
Date Issued | January 2023 |
Abstract | The K to 12 curriculum sought to have an integrated and seamless learning (DepEd, 2016). This study relates to the integration where teacher-generated concept maps in biology integration with physical sciences were used in students’ performance tasks. Biology Integration is the process where biology concepts are being integrated to concepts of physical sciences, namely chemistry, physics, and earth and space. This study utilized the embedded mixed methods design. There were two sets of participants in the study, namely the 37 teacher and 67 student participants selected purposively. The student participants came from two intact classes for the comparison and experimental groups. The 33 of the 67 student participants belonged to one intact class for the comparison group while the remaining 34 students belonged to another intact class for the experimental group. Data were collected using written activity, written interview, performance task, and focus group discussion. The written activity was evaluated by experts while thematic analysis was used in the interview. Focus group discussion was used to verify the results of the thematic analysis. For the performance task outputs of students on both groups, Mann-Whitney U test and inter-rater reliability were utilized. This study concludes that the steps the teachers used in the biology integration were (1) Scan the Grades 7-10 curriculum for science concepts, (2) Using previous knowledge, select biology and physical science concepts for possible integration, (3) Gather information from reliable references and/or experts on selected biology and physical science concepts, (4) Analyze connections of selected biology and physical science concepts, and (5) Decide on the best suitable biology and physical science concepts for integration. On the other hand, the steps used by the students in biology integration were (1) Learn the lesson using references used in the class, (2) Research for further informati |
