Abstract | Dancesport or competitive ballroom dancing has been popularized in the Philippines since the late 1990s. Dance costumes play an important role in dancesport because they attract the attention of the audience and adjudicators. This study analyzed the trends in amateur Latin dancesport dresses in the Philippines from 2006 to 2024. Specifically, it aimed to 1) describe the formal elements of the dresses in terms of silhouette, fabric, color, embellishment, and special details, 2) trace the trends in the formal elements, and 3) determine the bases for the trends. One hundred visual samples of amateur Latin dancesport dresses in the Philippines from from 2006 to 2024 were collected from Facebook photos, YouTube videos, and Facebook videos through convenience and purposive sampling, and current or former female amateur Latin dancesport competitors and an owner of a dancesport costume business in the Philippines were interviewed to support the findings. Findings show that some of the trends identified in the dresses have prevailed from 2006 to 2024, such as bodice silhouette and fabric trends; some have fluctuated, such as skirt length and dress color trends; and others have evolved, such as fringe embellishment trends. Factors affecting the trends included functionality, visual effects, fashion trends outside the dancesport world, international dancesport costume trends, competition rules, and alignment with other formal elements. Future research could compare the findings of this study to other types of dancesport dresses to further aid dancesport costume businesses or competitors in the improvement of the design or selection of their dancesport dresses. |
