Abstract This study investigates the financial impact of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on family resources and activities in the Philippines, focusing on diabetes, hypertension and breast cancer. This study aims to do the following: (1) determine the effects of NCDs on family resources and activities, (2) describe the financial management practice of families with NCD, and (3) identify sources of support that Filipino families have access to that alleviate health-related expenses and challenges. To meet its objectives, this study adopted a qualitative research approach, utlizing criterion-based sampling, surveys and interviews with 16 participants to gather in-depth data on health expenditures and indirect expenses, family communication and decisions on financial matters, and perceived effects of the presence of NCDs and health expenditures for its treatment on family resources and activities (recreational activities, living spaces, food and nutrition, work and education, mental health and well-being). Through thematic analysis, results of this research’s surveys and interviews reveal substantial financial strain, with significant portions of income directed towards medical expenses, adversely affecting other vital family resources such as food, education, recreational activities, living spaces and overall well-being. Six financial challenges were identified: (1) difficulty in budgeting for health expenses, (2) increasing food cost, (3) making extra effort to save enough work leaves for emergencies, (4) feeling overwhelmed with expenses, (5) consuming too much time in applying for and receiving support from the government and (6) no challenges in financing health expenses.
