| Abstract | College student-athletes are nutritionally vulnerable due to their elevated energy expenditure and physiological stress during training. Studies have found that Filipino collegiate athletes have “fair” nutrition knowledge (NK) and dietary habits (DH), but they lack accurate NK and healthy eating habits. Existing literature predominantly focuses on quantitative evaluations, lacking an in-depth understanding of the context of the numerical results. The study was conducted to explore the factors influencing NK and DH levels of UPD Football Varsity Players using a qualitative research design consisting of two phases: Phase 1 (survey) and Phase 2 (interview). Phase I used DHNKQ-Fil to assess the NK and DH levels among 38 participants, revealing that 76% demonstrated high NK (HNK) and 68% exhibited high DH (HDH). Based on their scores, participants were categorized into four groups: HNKHDH with 21 participants, HNKLDH with 8 participants, LNKHDH with 5 participants, and LNKLDH with 4 participants. Phase II involved semi-structured interviews with 4 participants from HNKLDH and 3 from each of the other categories to explore the underlying factors influencing their NK and DH. Thematic analysis revealed interconnected personal, behavioral, and environmental factors influencing NK and DH, specifically in the domains of eating behavior patterns; nutrition supplement usage; nutritional awareness and information utilization; and dietary preferences and practices. The study's findings offer valuable insights that can be used as a basis to inform and tailor the development of nutrition interventions appropriate for the research participants. |
