Resource Title | Solo parents' work-life balance: examining parental leave and other forms of support |
Date Issued | 19 June 2024 |
Abstract | This mixed-methods study explored the relationship between the utilization of parental leave and perceived work-life balance among solo parents, using Hayman’s (2005) constructs: Work Interference with Personal Life (WIPL), Personal Life Interference with Work (PLIW), and Work Personal Life Enhancement (WPLE). The study was conducted in the context of the recent passage of the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act in the Philippines in 2022, which granted easier access to parental leave. The research involved 68 participants through surveys, with a subset of 10 selected for interviews. Quantitative analysis revealed no significant linear relationship between parental leave and any of the work-life balance constructs (α=0.05). However, disaggregated data showed significant differences in mean parental leave utilization across monthly income (p<.001) and work hours (p=.01), with higher income solo parents and those working standard eight-hour days availing more leave. Qualitative data provided additional insights, highlighting other forms of support received by solo parents. Thematic analysis identified four main categories: childcare and household management, time management, financial support, and well-being. These supports may explain the non-significant relationship between parental leave and work-life balance. The findings suggest that while parental leave is valuable, its effectiveness is influenced by broader socio-economic and workplace factors, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems for solo parents. |
