Resource Title | Filipino male care workers in care facilities in the National Capital Region (NCR): their motivations, roles, and responsibilities |
Date Issued | 18 June 2024 |
Abstract | This study explores the motivations, roles, and responsibilities of Filipino male care workers in care facilities within the National Capital Region. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through interviews with 14 Filipino male care workers, selected via convenience sampling. The interview data were systematically coded and categorized into themes. The findings reveal that these Filipino male care workers are now challenging societal gender norms that traditionally associate caregiving with women, as reflected in their motivations, roles, and responsibilities within the caregiving field. Their motivations to enter and remain in the caregiving field are significantly shaped by social and interpersonal relationships, emotional factors, job satisfaction, and personal fulfillment. They construct an alternative form of masculinity by integrating caregiving duties with traditionally masculine tasks, such as technical and administrative roles. They also assume additional tasks that involve traditionally masculine tasks, such as maintenance and technical tasks, and domestic tasks, such as cooking and cleaning. The Filipino male care workers demonstrate their capability and willingness to perform both their primary caregiving duties and additional tasks, challenging traditional gender norms in caregiving. These findings could promote gender equality, introduce a diverse set of skills and perspectives to care work, and encourage more men to enter the field, potentially transforming caregiving into a more inclusive professional domain. |
