Abstract | This study aims to examine parental involvement on the dating practices of Generation Z students of UP Diliman; specifically, to determine the dating practices of the UP Diliman Generation Z students, and to describe the parental involvement towards the dating practices of UP Diliman Generation Z students. The study included 10 UP Diliman Generation Z students aged 21 to 23, and 10 parents of UP Diliman Generation Z students aged 46 to 67, who were not biologically related to each other. In-depth interviews were used to collect data, which was then analyzed using thematic analysis. Five (5) themes emerged from the dating practices given: (1) before the "in-a-relationship" stage, (2) during the “in-a-relationship” stage, (3) during relationship disagreements, (4) intimate dating practices, and (5) negative modern dating practices. Generation Z students disclosed their dating practices to their parents in various ways, based on their parent-child relationship and how they believe their parents would react and perceive them. Furthermore, the findings of the study revealed that the parental involvement on the dating practices of Generation Z students is most likely limited to providing support in the form of reminders, presence, finances, or a combination of these, since the parents of Generation Z students believed that their children are mature enough to make their own decisions. The findings of this study may increase awareness of Generation Z students’ dating practices, as well as parental sensitivity, proactivity, presence, and open-mindedness toward Generation Z students’ dating practices. |
