Resource Title Influences on the family planning decision-making process in a low-income Filipino community
Date Issued 20 June 2024
Abstract The study explores how low-income Filipino parents determine their family planning decision-making process by describing the influences, detailing their personal preferences, and investigating their process of family planning decision-making. Five parents with more than three children from Brgy. Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City, participated through convenience and snowball sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with each parent to derive insights without the influence of their partners. The data were subjected to reflexive thematic analysis, and the identified themes were discussed. Results identified economic, socio-cultural factors, and personal processing as key influences. Financial resources were the most prevalent influence, but the parents were more dominantly influenced by their own decisions due to their desire for togetherness. Personal preferences and aspirations for the family were considerations for their decision-making as parents. With this, the decision-making for family planning was organized into three steps: 1) marital dynamics, 2) parental adaptation, and 3) parental responsibilities. Overall, the parents are left to cope with having large families that are difficult to sustain. Thus, the effectiveness of their family planning decision-making process is hindered by barriers unaddressed by policies on population control. With these, the study may urge policymakers to conduct further research on low-income families for more inclusive and effective family planning policies.
