Resource Title The kinkeeping role of working mothers in Filipino nuclear families
Date Issued 18 July 2024
Abstract This thesis is an exploratory study on how kinkeeping is done in the context of Filipino families and the specific role that the mothers play in this. The current studies on kinkeeping are lacking, specifically focusing only on how Filipino families maintain relationships, which does fall under kinkeeping but does not fully represent it. Thus, this study sought to look into the pivotal role that working mothers play in the kinkeeping of Filipino nuclear families. Moreover, the study also aimed to determine the responsibilities, challenges, and coping strategies mothers use in fulfilling their kinkeeping role. The researchers utilized a qualitative research design through in-depth interviews of 15 Filipino working mothers residing in Metro Manila. Interviews were transcribed and thematically analyzed using the lens of matricentric feminism. With the data gathered, the study found that the participant mothers, although coming from different contexts with unique experiences, share similar responsibilities categorized into responsibilities in home management, childcare, and maintenance of family relationships. Gendered family dynamics still remain visible as mothers balance their productive and reproductive work, which produces multidimensional challenges that are both physical and cognitive. In contrast, their coping strategies are usually only within the cognitive dimension. Overall, the kinkeeping role of working mothers in Filipino nuclear families was found to be dynamic in the sense that their responsibilities and challenges change with daily family life and context they are in.
