| Abstract | Choosing to be childfree is becoming more common in the Philippines and around the world. This qualitative case study aims to understand how childfree Filipino adults in long-term relationships view marriage and family in comparison to the legal, academic, social, and economic definitions. Five heterosexual couples who are childfree, Filipino, residing in National Capital Region (NCR) or Region IV-A (CALABARZON), 28-37 years old, and cohabiting for at least four years and eight months participated in this case study. Triangulation was done by using photo elicitation, interview, and three-day diary entries. Data was presented through individual and cross-case reports and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this study show that the participants’ unique contexts of being childfree influence their views on marriage and family. The Proposed Life Cycle for Childfree Couples (Pelton & Hertlein, 2011) was used to analyze their childfree experiences and Symbolic Interaction Theory (White, Klein, & Martin, 2015) was used to analyze their meaning-making of marriage and family. Symbolic characteristics make up marriage and family rather than structural qualifications. Marriage is viewed to have both manifest and latent functions and that long-term cohabitation is considered a marriage whether the couple is married or not. Family is viewed to be composed of a group of two or more people based on the emotional attachments whether or not they are biologically related. Overall, childfree Filipino adults’ views contribute to the evolving definitions of marriage and family. The findings from this study may aid in shedding light on childfree individuals’ experiences, crafting more inclusive policies on different kinds of families, and fostering a better understanding towards childfreeness as a society. |
