Resource Title Exploring Parents' Knowledge of the Kindergarten Program and the Factors Influencing Decision on Child's Enrollment
Date Issued 25 June 2024
Abstract This study examines parental knowledge of and factors influencing the decision to enroll children in kindergarten, under the framework of the Kindergarten Education Act of 2012 in the Philippines. Interviews with 12 parents from Quezon City were conducted to explore their understanding of kindergarten programs and the determinants guiding enrollment decisions. The findings reveal that 11 out of 12 parents intend to enroll their child at the appropriate age as mandated by the Kindergarten Education Act. Utilizing thematic analysis, the researchers found that parents are aware that kindergarten is beneficial for their child’s cognitive, socio-emotional, and motor development, though gaps exist in curriculum awareness and teaching methods. Sources of information predominantly include personal experiences and advice from the educational community. Factors influencing enrollment decisions encompass educational benefits, safety concerns, and peer feedback. The Developmental Niche Theory by Harkness and Super (1994) show how these elements all interact with each other and influence parents. Recommendations include enhancing parental support through accessible information channels while advocating for policy improvements to facilitate informed decision-making and optimize kindergarten readiness.
