Abstract | The UP Streetdance Club (UPSDC), despite its 27-year tenure as a duly recognized organization in the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, has yet to establish clear guidelines and principles in designing its costumes for competitions. The persistence of issues encountered in costume designing necessitates the formulation of clear, written directives to enhance the group’s competitive edge. To address this problem, this qualitative study adopted a pragmatic worldview and needs-based analysis to develop a costume design guideline for the organization. The study purposively sampled eight (8) UPSDC dancers who participated in focus group discussions, guided by a questionnaire designed to gather their insights on aesthetics and functional costume needs and preferences in terms of design, ease, comfort, and fit. Findings reveal that in terms of design, the dancers prefer costumes harmonious with the competition theme while exhibiting a balance between complexity and comfort, and dancers’ individuality. For ease and comfort, the dancers prioritize lightweight and stretchable costumes that can easily be donned and removed without assistance. Incorporating these insights, a comprehensive costume design guideline was developed, detailing the technical requirements and guiding principles essential for the conceptualization, construction, and fit development of dance costumes. To assess the guideline’s effectiveness, the club’s costume designer evaluated the design guideline by developing a costume for the UAAP Streetdance Competition Season 86. Subsequently, the dance coach assessed the actual costumes created through the design guidelines. The study concludes that the guideline facilitated the timely costume development of UPSDC. It is recommended that the organization continuously revisit and refine the guidelines to adapt to evolving needs and preferences. |
