Abstract | Apart from designers, the task of creating an effective classroom space design may also fall on the teachers themselves. This descriptive study evaluated five classroom spaces by describing their physical condition, identifying the language teachers’ spatial considerations, determining their applied adjustments, and evaluating the outcomes of applied adjustments in the context of active learning activities (ALA). The study purposely selected a public school and grades five and six language teachers and their classrooms. The triangulation method was used to gather data through observation, online survey, and interview. Norman’s (2002) model of action was used to establish the interaction between the language teachers and the classroom space which impelled them to form spatial considerations and make adjustments in the classroom. The adjustments were evaluated using Rands and Topf (2017) focusing on the (1) openness of space, (2) flexibility of seating layout, and (3) utilization of teaching tools. Results showed that the existing physical conditions of classrooms were not sufficient considering their number of students, and when compared with DepEd’s classroom standards. The spatial considerations of teachers for ALA included the mobility within the space, seating layout arrangements, and easy use teaching tools. However, despite adjustments made such as maintaining open spaces, adjusting seating layouts, and allocating storage for teaching tools, these did not meet their intention to address their teaching needs and increase student engagement. There were compromises that resulted in ineffective outcomes in the classroom space design for ALA. Overall, findings showed how ALA could be influenced by the classroom space design. The spatial considerations and adjustments of selected language teachers affirmed their role, not only as users, but as classroom space managers, specifically for effective ALA. |
