| Resource Title | Dress two impress: a case study on how closeted queer men use dress for self-presentation when “in” and “out” of the closet |
| Date Issued | 2 July 2024 |
| Abstract | The relationship between dress and the expression of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) is a critical area of study, yet there is a notable gap in research focusing on closeted queer men. The research aimed to explore how dress is used by closeted queer men for self-presentation when they are “in” and “out” of the closet. Self-presentation is the goal-directed effort to achieve a desired impression from an audience. Using a qualitative case study approach, ten (10) self-identified closeted cisgender queer men were purposively selected to participate in semi-structured and open-ended interviews. Findings revealed that participants concealed their SOGIE when “in the closet.” Typically, they remain closeted to their families, in church, and around strangers. They used dress to present themselves in a masculine or gender-neutral manner to align with gender norms to avoid judgment and homophobic remarks. Conversely, when “out of the closet,” commonly with friends and in college, the participants freely expressed their SOGIE by dressing in a more gender-fluid or androgynous manner and wearing more make-up and accessories. The extent of “queering up” or adding queer signifiers in dressing varies for each individual. However, some participants’ desired impressions did not necessarily relate to their SOGIE, but dress was still used to achieve their desired impressions. Furthermore, other respondents focused on actions and behavior rather than dress. The research hoped to give voice to closeted queer men who are under-examined, especially in Filipino scholarships. It also underscores the significant use of dress in impression management to protect them from the negative effects of revealing their SOGIE. Future research could help expand this inquiry with a wider demographic and SOGIE range. |
