Resource Title Risk profiling of methanol in lambanog by the Filipino consuming population
Date Issued 21 June 2024
Abstract Lambanog is a popular spirit liquor in the Philippines that is made of distilled fermented coconut sap with alcohol content between 40-45% alcohol by volume (80 to 90 proof) and is known for its colorless appearance with a sweet pungent smell. However, the consumption of Lambanog was linked to methanol poisoning which manifests adverse health effects such as nausea, vomiting and severe exposure to such could lead to metabolic acidosis and end-organ failure. With this, it is imperative that a risk profile of methanol in Lambanog by the Filipino consuming population be established. This was done through the determination of data gaps in the risk profiling process, estimation of dietary exposure (DE) and risks, and determination of local available risk management options in the control of this hazard. Results showed that there was aggregated data for the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the country, lacking specific consumption data for Lambanog consumption. Moreover, the dietary exposure (DE) estimates did not exceed the established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 7.1 mg/kg bw/day, implying that the consumption of Lambanog showed no appreciable risk to the health of the Filipino consuming population.
