Resource Title Decision-making on children's extracurricular activities by low-income parents in Mangatarem, Pangasinan
Date Issued 20 July 2024
Abstract Decision-making is a process that involves multiple steps and considerations before making a decision. This qualitative study aimed to discuss the decision-making process of low-income Filipino parents regarding the participation of their children in extracurricular activities (ECAs). ECAs are activities outside the regular school curriculum. They play an important role in the experiences and development of children. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews with 20 Filipino parents with children aged 5 to 12 years old who participated in ECAs within the past year. Participants of this study were from Mangatarem, Pangasinan due to the significant number of parents who are beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in the locale, indicating a significant number of low-income parents. Through thematic analysis, the facilitating factors and constraints the parents faced and how these affected their decision are discussed. The facilitating factors identified include (1) the interest of the child, (2) socialization, (3) safety, (4) providing new experience, (5) the positive effect on the academic performance of the children, and (6) redirection of attention to more productive activity. The constraints identified are (1) distance from the child, (2) lack of budget, and (3) negative effect on academic performance of the children. It was revealed that the facilitating factors motivated the parents to find a way around the constraints to allow their children to participate in ECAs. The interest of the child appeared to be the most important factor to the parents. Overall, the participants used two distinct decision-making process models.
