Resource Title Plus-size Filipino women’s body image and its relationship with physical and aesthetic experiences with ready-to-wear plus-size clothing
Date Issued 19 June 2024
Abstract Plus-size fashion is a growing sector of the fashion industry as a result of the growing plus-size population, yet plus-size women continue to face challenges in finding clothes that satisfy their needs and wants. Negative sentiments about being plus-size continue to persist and have psychological effects on them as well. This study aimed to find the relationship between the body image of plus-size Filipino women and the experiences they have had with ready-to-wear plus-size clothing by first describing their body image, then describing and quantifying their experiences with various aspects of clothing (physical, aesthetic, and price). An online survey was disseminated through social media to gather data from a sample size of 100 plus-size Filipino women aged 18-50 via convenience sampling. Three follow-up interviews were also held with randomly selected respondents. Results found that respondents were generally dissatisfied with the current state of plus-size fashion locally, with largely negative experiences in clothing fit, style availability, and price, as well as negative perceptions about their body in relation to clothing experiences. The relationship of these two factors was found to be statistically positive based on Spearman’s rho tests, suggesting that the two are proportionally related, ergo a negative body image accompanied negative clothing experiences and vice versa. The thematic analysis supported these findings, with responses discussing various dissatisfactions with clothing, their body, or both. Age was found to have no significant effect on both body image and clothing experiences based on the results of the Kruskal-Wallis test. Further studies on plus-size clothing for the Philippine market are recommended for a more comprehensive conclusion.
