Date Issued 21 June 2024
Abstract This study aims to examine the attitudes of Generation Z University of the Philippines Diliman students towards traditional Filipino family values (close family ties, respect for elders and authority, religiosity, utang na loob) and rituals (eating meals together, celebrating/spending holidays and special occasions with extended family, attending religious activities together). It also aims to compare the attitudes of Generation Z based on their demographic characteristics (sex, family structure, socioeconomic status, location) and to describe the reasons behind their attitudes. A mixed-method research design was employed to fulfill the research objectives. A descriptive design was used to determine the attitudes of Generation Z through an online attitude scale that was distributed by means of random cluster sampling. A causal-comparative design was utilized to compare the differences in the attitudes of Generation Z based on their demographic characteristics through Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H Tests. A qualitative design was applied to gather data on the reasons behind Generation Z’s attitudes, and it was done through in-depth interviews wherein participants were selected using criterion sampling. Results show that Generation Z individuals generally have positive attitudes towards all of the studied values and rituals except for attending religious activities together. It has also found that there is no significant difference in Generation Z’s attitudes based on sex, family structure, and socioeconomic status. However, there is a significant difference in Generation Z’s attitudes towards respect for elders and authority only based on location. It was seen that urban respondents are more likely to have a preference for this value compared to those who grew up in rural areas. The most significant reasons behind Generation Z’s attitudes include values formation within the family and negative experiences in relation to the observed Filipino family value
