Abstract This study aimed to determine the food safety knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of food handlers in a newly opened establishment in a university campus. Specifically, it described the food handlers’ KAP on food safety, determined its relationship with their socio-demographic profile, and identified perceived barriers to practicing food safety measures. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire involving 81% (25/31) of employed food handlers were implemented. Most respondents were female (60%), aged 18-30 years old (60%), had one to five years of experience as food handlers (36%), and were either cooks/chefs or all-around workers (36%). Also, 72% attended food safety training. Fifty-two percent of workers demonstrated good knowledge, 72% had good attitude, and 72% implemented good practices. Among the demographic characteristics, significant differences were found in the knowledge scores of the food handlers based on sex (p = 0.01) and marital status (p = 0.04), with the females and singles having significantly higher scores. Moreover, there was a weak positive correlation between K and A, and A and P, and a weak negative correlation between K and P. The major perceived barriers of all respondents included lack of knowledge and overall negative attitude of food handlers towards food safety, as well as other tasks competing with their responsibility for performing food safety practices. It is suggested that the current food safety KAP of the food handlers must be improved through regular food safety training and giving food handlers ample time to perform important food safety practices. On-site observation of food handlers’ food safety practices and microbiological analysis of pertinent samples indicating food safety practices in the establishment are also recommended to validate the results.
