Abstract The relationship between religion and development has been understudied, especially in the context of indigenous faith systems. This research addresses this gap by examining the role of religious in peacebuilding within the Tri-people community of Upi, Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines. Tri-people, in the context of this research, refers to the three main faiths in the Municipality, namely, the Teduray indigenous faith, Christians, and Muslims. Despite a history of violent conflict, Upi has achieved remarkable progress in peace and development. This study seeks to understand how religious institutions have contributed to this success, aiming to inform development and peacebuilding strategies in similar contexts. Specifically, this research aims to describe the community context, identify key peacebuilding initiatives, analyze the influence of religious institutions, and derive lessons for community development practice. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing document analysis, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions to gather data on the role of religious institutions in peacebuilding. Findings reveal that religious institutions in Upi have played a pivotal role in fostering social capital, building community resilience and unity, and promoting sustainable development through their peacebuilding initiatives. The synergy between religious institutions and the local government has been found instrumental in sustaining these efforts. Moreover, the study lays out key elements for religious institutions to become an effective peacebuilding resource. Furthermore, the peacebuilding initiatives themselves have emerged as valuable community development resources, demonstrating the potential of religious institutions to drive positive social change.
