Resource Title | Digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprise in the Philippines: challenges and opportunities in the future |
Date Issued | 03 May 2025 |
Abstract | This study aims to explore digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Philippines. It focuses on the opportunities that digital transformation may provide to SMEs, the key factors that SMEs need to consider in their digital transformation, and the challenges faced by the SMEs in their digital transformation journey. The researcher used mixed-method design, particularly convergent parallel design to validate and cross-examine the digital transformation of SMEs from both CEO/owner and employee perspective. This is carried out via an interview with the CEO and a survey questionnaire for the employees. A conceptual framework is proposed to illustrate the relationships between the components identified visualizing the digital transformation journey. The result of the study shows that opportunities, factors, and challenges are linked together wherein an analysis can be done starting from any of the three. The opportunities that can be pursued by the SMEs can be understood based on their business ambitions and strategic changes. Factors in the organization can be derived from analyzing internal and external factors. Lastly, challenges can be classified through technological, organizational, and environmental aspects. These three components affect each other. Hence— the bigger the opportunity, the greater the change required, and the higher the risks to be expected. The framework contributes to understanding the relationship between components and how this can be a guide for starting the digital transformation of small and medium-sized businesses. The framework is simple enough to help SMEs start their digital transformation. |
