Resource Title | Technology assessment of Open Radio Access Network for enhanced connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) |
Date Issued | 29 May 2025 |
Abstract | The expansion of telecommunications infrastructure in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) is essential for fostering digital inclusion and stimulating economic growth. This study assesses the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of deploying Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) in comparison to Traditional Radio Access Network (Traditional RAN), within the framework of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Philippine Sustainable Access to Connectivity (PSAC) GIDA initiative. A technology assessment is conducted, considering capital expenditure (CapEx), operational expenditure (OpEx), scalability, and implementation challenges. The findings indicate that Open RAN presents a more adaptable and economical solution, diminishing vendor lock-in and enhancing network interoperability. Nonetheless, obstacles such as integration complexities and maintenance requirements underscore the need for additional policy and infrastructure support. The results yield actionable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders who aspire to optimize connectivity solutions for underserved communities. |
