Abstract Plastic pollution from single-use packaging remains a pressing environmental issue, particularly in the Philippines, where plastic straws are a major contributor to waste. This study investigated the knowledge, attitude, and perception (KAP) of Filipino plastic straw consumers toward edible straws as a sustainable alternative. An online survey was conducted among 388 valid respondents from the Greater Manila Area. Results showed that 50.77% of participants had good knowledge of edible straws, while 29.38% had fair and 19.85% had poor knowledge. Although most were aware of the environmental benefits, misconceptions remained about their safety when used in hot or microwaved drinks. Regarding attitude, 79.38% of respondents expressed a good attitude toward reducing plastic straw use and showed willingness to pay for alternatives. In terms of perception, 55.15% rated edible straws as fair, 23.20% as good, and 21.65% as poor, with durability being a common concern. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between knowledge and perception (p < 0.001) and between attitude and perception (p < 0.001), while no significant association was found between knowledge and attitude (p = 0.085). ANOVA results showed that most socio-demographic variables had no significant effect on KAP scores, except for marital status, which influenced attitude (p = 0.013). This study provides the first local baseline data on consumer awareness of edible straws in the Philippines. The findings highlight the need for targeted education campaigns and improved product features to support the adoption of sustainable packaging alternatives.
