Resource Title Beyond the classroom: a study on student perceptions of collaborative learning in informal learning spaces
Date Issued 9 June 2025
Abstract This study examined the existing interior design features of two informal learning spaces at UP Diliman: the College of Home Economics (CHE) Library and The Third Space, focusing on their effect on collaborative learning. Using a multi-case sequential exploratory design, the learning spaces were observed and photo-documented during phase one of the study, followed by a survey of 44 CHE students (22 from each learning space) to determine how they perceive specific design features of the informal learning spaces (Closs, Mahat, & Imms, 2021; Woolner, 2010) – environmental (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), acoustics, lighting, furniture, and technology) and temporal factors (flexibility, durability, and zoning). Thematic analysis was employed for phase one data, while descriptive statistics, Borda count, and thematic analysis were used to analyze phase two data. Findings show that both learning spaces have varied air conditioning systems, natural and artificial sources of lighting, durable and flexible furniture, Wi-Fi and power outlets, and activity-supporting zones. Based on student perceptions, good ventilation, fast internet connection, and ample power outlets are some of the factors that can enhance student collaboration. On the other hand, students find that chairs without cushions and too hot or too cold temperatures are some of the conditions that could hinder collaboration. Lastly, design features were recommended based on the gathered evidence like having control for environmental factors (accessible temperature adjustments, lighting options) and temporal aspects (adaptable zones, huddle rooms and flexible furniture). This study offers insights for school administrators and designers in creating spaces that support collaboration and provides a basis for future research on informal learning spaces in academic settings.
