| Resource Title | Filipino cultural expression through the national costumes of Miss Philippines in the Miss Universe Pageant from 2018 to 2024 |
| Date Issued | 4 June 2025 |
| Abstract | The Miss Universe Pageant is an avenue for cultural representation, production, and negotiation. In the National Costume Show, contestants wear costumes that embody a country’s identity, lifestyle, and essence. Despite success at the Miss Universe pageant, the Philippines has struggled with National Costumes due to colonial legacies and cultural diversity. Using semiotic and visual analysis of publicly available media, this study examined the concepts, designs, and meanings behind Miss Philippines’ Miss Universe National Costumes from 2018 to 2024. Costume concepts diverged from archetypes like the Terno or “Muslim princess” by highlighting diverse facets of Filipino culture from mythology to vehicles and popular culture, while design elements included recurring features such as headpieces, fitted silhouettes, and ornate embellishments. The analysis identified key cultural signifiers ranging from national symbols like the Philippine eagle and flag, to references to mythology and modern icons like jeepneys and airplanes. Beyond cultural signifiers, common semiotic themes in the National Costumes include bravery, spirituality, and regional craftsmanship, with broader implications on women's empowerment and globalization. The growing input of titleholders and local designers has also resulted in National Costumes signifying personal narratives and advocacies. Unlike past designs that exoticized cultural groups, modern National Costumes inspired by indigenous cultural communities entail consultation and collaboration with community representatives, illustrating a growing emphasis on cultural sensitivity. However, concepts and designs still rely on generalized representation of Filipino culture, sometimes leading to some level of misrepresentation and neglect of Visayan and Mindanaoan cultural identities by relying on homogenized national symbols or fantasy elements instead of innovative and grounded portrayals of regional narratives.
