Date Issued 5 June 2025
Abstract This study explored traveling in the context of Filipino families. The study aimed to describe the activities that families do while traveling and their family cohesion and family adaptation during their travels. It also aimed to describe the benefits and challenges of traveling together as a family. Data were collected through an online survey and in-depth interviews of family members with recent travel experiences. The participants included 25 individuals, 15 of which were interviewed for deeper insights. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were utilized to analyze the data. Findings reveal that travel activities such as sightseeing, shopping, culinary adventure/food trip, city tour, and nature and wildlife tours were the most common activities by families while traveling. The levels of family cohesion and family adaptation while traveling were mostly high and moderate. Furthermore, the respondents see traveling with family as a way to help in strengthening their bond and closeness, a way to create lasting memories, share expenses with other members of the family, create an opportunity to deviate from the usual routine, and a time to pause internal conflicts. However, challenges like planning, physical condition, difference in preferences, and illness can hinder the overall experience. To mitigate the negative effects of these challenges to their travel experience, family members practice several coping strategies, such as advanced planning to accommodate the schedule of everyone, compromising, and making necessary adjustments.
