Resource Title Filipino mothers' lived experiences of implementing occupational therapy home activities for children with autism
Date Issued 9 June 2025
Abstract Mothers play key roles in extending therapeutic opportunities for children with autism (CWA) through implementing occupational therapy home activities (OTHA). Understanding how mothers experience and make sense of their roles in implementing OTHA for CWA will help address their specific needs and increase their engagement in the therapy process. This study aimed to answer the research question: “How do mothers experience implementing OTHA for CWA?” Specifically, this study described the mothers’ key lived experiences (KLE), meanings, and roles related to implementing OTHA. Seven mothers whose CWA were aged 3.0 – 5.0 years old (36 – 60 months) and were undergoing 1-2 times a week clinic-based OT from selected therapy centers in Pampanga for at least 3 months (or at least 12 clinic-based OT sessions) participated. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Sikolohiyang Pilipino were utilized to explore the mothers’ lived experiences of implementing OTHA through a demographic questionnaire and an in-depth online semi-structured interview. Interviews were audio/video recorded and transcribed verbatim. The findings were then analyzed through the framework of Symbolic Interactionism. Four KLE emerged: (1) encountering the CWA’s responses during OTHA, (2) processing the outcomes of OTHA, (3) encountering barriers to implementing OTHA, and (4) experiencing supports to implementing OTHA. From these KLE, the mothers constructed meanings about OTHA as a way to understand the CWA, of implementing home activities as a way to facilitate the CWA’s development, and OTHA as a way to understand themselves. These meanings formed the roles they perceived and enacted as carer, as manager, as advocate, as researcher, and as facilitator of the child’s development at home. The findings underscore the importance of harnessing mothers as active partners in planning and delivering interventions for CWA, particularly through the implementation of therapeutic home acti
