Resource Title Multimedia entertainment at home: impact on space use and social interaction among selected middle-class Filipino families
Date Issued 16 June 2025
Abstract This qualitative study investigates how current multimedia consumption practices influence space use and social interaction in select middle-class Filipino households. Using a multiple case study approach, three (3) families were purposively selected, each with two (2) to five (5) representatives. Data were collected through an online survey and semi-structured group interviews, then analyzed through tabulation and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that multimedia use for entertainment typically occurs in the living room, dining area, and bedroom, and was influenced by reasons such as privacy for individual use, accessibility to media devices, personal belongings, bathroom, and food storage, thermal comfort, adequate space size, good acoustics, location of the primary activity, availability of fixed media appliances, energy efficiency to reduce costs, and the flexibility of the space to support different types of use. Families use personal spaces and communal areas where primary activity is done during individual multimedia entertainment, while shared multimedia use leads them to utilize a designated social space and other flexible communal areas. They also adapt these spaces depending on whether multimedia for entertainment is individual or shared. For individual, they make temporary adjustments and rely on portable media devices for flexibility, while for shared, they are prompted to make more permanent changes and involve fixed media appliances. Moreover, multimedia use for entertainment can either foster or discourage social interaction and cause deliberate withdrawal (pagkanya-kanya) even within shared spaces, with individual media consumption allowing indirect connection while shared use encourages active engagement and compromise for mutual harmony (pakikisama). Lastly, key considerations for designing homes for current multimedia use for entertainment are summarized through the models of the Filipino Sense of Comfort and The Contemporary Filipino Bulwag
