Abstract This study developed gelatin-pectin (GP) films incorporated with virgin coconut oil (VCO). Six formulations were prepared through the solution casting method by varying the GP ratios (100:0, 75:25, and 50:50), with each ratio prepared with and without the incorporation of 0.3% VCO. The films were characterized to identify the formulation with the best physical and mechanical properties. This formulation was then standardized and tested for its migration properties. Results showed that the addition of pectin to fish gelatin (FG) increased (p < 0.05) film thickness, moisture content, tensile strength (TS), and water vapor permeability (WVP). On the other hand, the incorporation of VCO further increased (p < 0.05) film thickness, opacity, and EAB, while decreasing solubility and TS. Both pectin and VCO improved film barrier properties against UV and visible light (p < 0.05). Among the six formulations, the G75P25C0.3 formulation (75:25 GP ratio with 0.3% VCO) exhibited the most favorable balance of physical and mechanical properties. Two independent production runs of this formulation demonstrated no significant (p > 0.05) differences in all properties, confirming its reproducibility under controlled laboratory conditions. The migration behavior of the standardized films in distilled water, 3% acetic acid, and 95% ethanol at 40℃ for 2h exceeded the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm2 for all simulants. However, this limit, which is used for plastic films, was used in the study due to its unavailability for biopolymer-based films. Further research is recommended to explore the incorporation of crosslinkers and other additives to improve the chemical resistance of the GP-VCO incorporated film.
