| Abstract | Social inclusion is becoming the new focus of social development in the 21st century. The SDGs emphasize the importance of inclusion, such that majority of the SDG indicators are related to eradicating exclusion and promoting inclusion. While already widely used in Europe and Latin America to address the inclusion of different marginalized groups, there is little evidence that social inclusion is being pursued in the Philippines as a development approach, especially with regards to IPs. Exclusion of IPs, and the Lumad in particular, is a product of many factors, including historical processes, State neglect, and even exclusionary State policies. To reverse the vicious cycle of poverty and deprivations of the Lumad, it is theorized that by upholding their right to inclusive education, a virtuous cycle will be created that will enhance their self- determination; access to services, markets, and spaces; and promote their ability, dignity, and opportunity – that will eventually contribute to enhancing their social inclusion. Through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation – the narratives and perspectives of some Lumad youths and other participants to the Lumad Bakwit School in UPD were explored to determine their experiences of exclusion and aspirations for social inclusion and inclusive education. While not versed with social exclusion theory, the participants are keenly aware of their exclusion from mainstream society due to their lived experiences, and were able to articulate a clear vision of their aspirations for a transformed, inclusive society, and an inclusive education program that is anchored on their rights to their ancestral lands and self-determination. |
