Date Issued 30 June 2025
Abstract Food insecurity remains a critical problem in the Philippines, especially among low-income families. Thus, this study examined the food insecurity status of selected low-income families residing in Daan Tubo, Barangay UP Campus. This study also explored the practices of these families on food planning and preparation, and the role that social capital plays in mitigating food insecurity. A mixed-methods approach, specifically an explanatory design, was used to answer the research problem. For the quantitative part, the study employed descriptive statistics to assess the level of food insecurity among low-income families using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). Qualitative research was used specifically in-depth interview to describe their experiences of food (in) security. A total of 30 families participated in the survey through criterion sampling, and among them, 10 were chosen as sub-samples for the interview. Results revealed that the majority of the respondents are experiencing moderate food insecurity. Thus, it is recommended that low-income families reinforce their efficient food access practices while improving their food management skills. The local government sector also needs to coordinate with home economists and food and nutrition experts to craft programs and policies that support low-income families’ food security. As for the field of Home Economics, more research-based, culturally
