| Abstract | Communities throughout the Philippines can be found along the “riles” or railroad tracks— spaces long plagued by poverty and other wicked problems. Residents endure cramped, overcrowded dwellings and the constant risk of being run over by trains. Yet some, like the San Antonio Trolley Drivers (SANTO), have adapted by providing transportation for fellow residents. This phenomenological study focused on their adaptive strategies, spatial practices, and their grounded concept of kaalwanan or well-being. The study was conducted in Brgy. San Antonio, Los Baños, Laguna using triangulated methods: interviews, key informant interviews, observation, and desk reviews. Immersion-based techniques such as pakikipamuhay and pakapa-kapa were used to gain deeper insight into the drivers’ lives and struggles. This study also documented the drivers’ willingness, preparedness, and perceptions of institutional relocation processes. The expansion of the Philippine National Railways’ North-South Commuter Railway threatens these communities with relocation. Despite looming displacement, the trolley drivers remain grounded in resilience and hope. They have long anticipated relocation, but their daily lives focus on survival, community support, and a belief in a better future. As long as they can provide for their families, they continue pursuing kaalwanan—one padyak at a time. |
