Resource Title Scenario planning of the implementation of additive manufacturing in the aerospace industry using structural analysis
Date Issued 29 December 2025
Abstract The results of the scenario planning using structural analysis determined how the group of stakeholders from the aerospace industry perceived the implementation of additive manufacturing in the aerospace industry. The resulting matrix of direct and indirect influence made it possible to map and identify the variables having strong influence on other variables and how much they are dependent on the other variables in the system being studied. Hence the method of combining PESTLE and Structural Analysis enabled the development of the scenario logic using the two key variables identified from the crucial factors as the result of clustering the variables are L3 (Aerospace regulatory Approvals) which is the X-axis and Eco5 (Increased demand for additive manufacturing) which is the Y-axis. These two variables that shaped the four developed scenarios show a high degree of dependence and strong influence in the system.

For every scenario developed in each quadrant, the variables have been linked to each other using the resulting graphical representation of the dependence-influence matrix. The results show whether one variable has a direct influence on another variable, or in many cases, how the varying degree of influence of other variables create a domino effect to allow one variable to be influenced by another variable.

Overall, four apparent themes have been deduced. Scenario 1 has a theme of Design Liberation for having a high increase in demand for additive manufacturing and high aerospace regulatory approvals. Scenario 2 is Non-Proprietary and Security Flaws for having low increase in demand for additive manufacturing and high aerospace regulatory approvals. Scenario 3 is Trade War for having both low increase in demand for additive manufacturing and aerospace regulatory approvals. And Scenario 4 is Societal Integration for having high increase in demand for additive manufacturing with low aerospace approvals.
