| Abstract | Filipino residential interiors exhibit the “space within a space” attribute (Villegas, 1992), which allowed homes to adapt to the changing needs and circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Such crisis brought about work-from-home (WFH) arrangements which remained an option to this day. This study explored the following: (1) identified the interior design characteristics of selected middle-class Filipino home offices during the pandemic; (2) examined the spatial adjustments and design strategies utilized after the pandemic; and, (3) assessed how the families adapted, and the impact of using home offices in relation to work-family life balance. Utilizing a qualitative research design and descriptive multiple-case study approach, the researchers selected six (6) participants through purposive and snowball sampling design. Data gathering was done through interview guides, observational studies, and photo documentation, and was analyzed through deductive qualitative analysis (DQA). Findings show that interior design during the pandemic were makeshift home office setups, incorporating work equipment and materials to existing spaces. These developed spatial adjustments for fixed-feature home offices into enclosed rooms after the pandemic. In the persistence of WFH setups, design strategies improved during post-pandemic through intentional selection of work objects (i.e. office chairs, computer monitors, and headsets), personalization of space through decorations, and integration of natural lighting into the home offices. Although work-family life collision caused the participants’ WFH challenges, their familial prioritization took precedence over their work life, with the home office allowing them to maintain such family-centeredness. Optimal home office design and successful adaptation were found to be influenced by the participants’ demographic positioning. It is recommended to investigate a more heterogeneous sociodemographic sample in future studies. |
