| Resource Title | Urban symphonies : modelling Quezon City's urban park sonotopes through a multi-method soundscape approach |
| Date Issued | August 2024 |
| Abstract | The study aims to model the sonic environments, or sonotopes, of Quezon City's urban parks. The research utilizes a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods including landscape metrics and biophysical mapping to assess the conditions of the sites on both macro- and micro-level, participatory observation to investigate the human activities, and noise and sound mapping to evaluate the current noise conditions and to identify the present biophony, geophony, and anthrophony (categorized to human, mechanical, and traffic sounds) in the sites. The mapping results show 3,292.88 hectares of green spaces, composed of 371 green space patches and classifies to 19 patch classes. 15 focus sites were purposively selected and were designated with a centroid and specific data collection points. Noise mapping results recorded high levels of noise in sites with direct adjacency to major roads, while park closed canopy away from the major roads has the softest noise level. Sound mapping results show the dominance of traffic sounds in all of the sites, co-existing with biophony. Fluctuating patches of human and mechanical sounds we recorded, while geophony was the least observed sound. Furthermore, the non-parametric statistical analysis between landscape metrics and sound reveal strong positive correlation of LPI and NDVI and consistent inverse directions of both metrics to noise and sound quality levels. With the associations of the patch classes from the focus sites observed and the observed sound quality data, 26 sonotopes were characterized in the urban landscape of Quezon City. Future directions may involve conservation, preservation, improvement, redevelopment, and creation of these sonotopes as soundscape management planning strategies. Future studies may look into randomized site sampling, comparative analyses, diversified data collection strategies, and expanded temporal considerations. |
