| Resource Title | Reviving The Bangka Industry: A Living Bangka Workshop and Philippine Museum of Small Watercrafts in Navotas |
| Date Issued | May 2026 |
| Abstract | The maritime culture of Navotas is deeply intertwined with the bangka industry, which sustains livelihoods and shapes community identity as the Fishing Capital of the Philippines. This project investigated how architectural design may protect the bangka heritage while introducing safe and innovative building techniques in response to the challenges of industrial modernization and the loss of traditional knowledge among younger generations. The research informed the development of a Living Bangka Workshop and Philippine Museum of Small Watercrafts through semi-structured interviews, site analysis, and typological observations of existing workshops and museums. Guided by the goal of promoting intergenerational skill transfer through experiential and participatory learning, the design adopts the concept of Convergence of Currents, where water, human, and cultural flows intersect. The project developed flexible workshop zones, interactive exhibits, and community-oriented spaces wherein artisans, apprentices, and visitors could engage in an active way with the craft of bangka building, strengthening both practical skills and cultural identity. The facility also considers site conditions by incorporating measures to address potential flooding and by establishing connections with surrounding buildings to support continuity and accessibility. Overall, the project positions Navotas as a living center for maritime heritage that sustains the bangka industry while bridging tradition and innovation. |
