| Resource Title | Pamana ng Sasa: Revitalizing the Nipa Palm Industry through a Sustainable Lightweight Post-Harvest Agro-Ecotourism Complex in Paombong, Bulacan |
| Date Issued | May 2026 |
| Abstract | The nipa palm or “sasa” industry of Paombong, Bulacan, despite the town’s identity as the Vinegar Capital of the Philippines, faces stagnation due to aging farmers, disrupted knowledge transfer, inconsistent and often unethical post-harvest practices, low profitability, and the conversion of plantations to other land uses. These challenges threaten not only local livelihood but also a deeply rooted cultural heritage. While stakeholders strongly desire to uplift and expand the industry, progress remains constrained by the absence of essential infrastructure. In response, this study proposes a sustainable lightweight post-harvest and agri-ecotourism complex within Paombong Eco Park to revitalize the industry by strengthening production efficiency, diversifying nipa-based products, knowledge transfer, promoting circular resource use, and repositioning nipa as a living cultural asset that can stimulate agri-ecotourism. The project is grounded in design-research methodological approach beginning with literature and precedents analysis, site and user analysis in Paombong, stakeholder interviews, tourism acceptance surveys, and immersive fieldwork in local nipa communities. Its architectural strategies draw from the form–function–meaning framework to translate heritage into spatial expression; lightweight architecture for material efficiency and adaptability; cradle-to-cradle principles for resource recovery and waste-to-energy systems aligned with the eco-park’s conservation goals; and the loop circulation approach to organize processing facilities along with the tour movement. Conceptually, the design centers on heritage revitalization, preserving traditional knowledge while transforming it into a progressive, living heritage through education spaces and biophilic connectivity that maintains harmony with nature. The resulting proposal envisions a holistic complex that unifies production, learning, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, serving |
